Best Way to Kill Lawn Moss Without Harming Grass

For moss growing among grass, a lawn moss killer containing iron sulfate (also called ferrous sulfate) is usually the best targeted treatment: it kills existing moss without being intended to kill the surrounding lawn when you use it as directed. Choose a product labeled for use on your type of lawn, follow its application rate and watering instructions, and expect the moss to darken before you rake out the dead material.
Iron-based treatments are a better fit for this job than household shortcuts such as vinegar, which can damage grass along with the moss. Keep the product off paving and other hard surfaces because iron can stain, and follow the label’s directions for handling the product and keeping people and pets off treated areas.
Once the moss has died, gently rake it out so grass has room to fill in; avoid tearing up healthy turf, especially if the ground is wet. If the exposed area is thin or bare, reseed with grass suited to its light conditions and keep the seedbed watered according to the seed instructions.
Treating moss alone rarely solves the reason it appeared, so take a close look at shade, drainage, compacted soil, and thinning grass before applying more product. Heavy shade may call for a shade-tolerant grass or a different ground cover, while compacted soil or persistent wetness may need attention before reseeding will succeed.

We recommend treating the iron product as the cleanup step and a healthier lawn as the long-term goal: mow at an appropriate height for your grass, avoid scalping, and water deeply rather than keeping the surface constantly damp. If you suspect a soil pH problem, get a soil test before adding lime; lime is not a moss killer and may not be needed.

An iron-based moss killer labeled for lawns is the usual choice for treating moss among grass. Apply it only as directed for your lawn, since incorrect application can still discolor or stress turf.
No moss killer permanently prevents moss from growing back if shade, moisture, or thin grass continue to favor it. Remove the dead moss, then improve the site conditions and establish healthy grass where it can grow.
