What Kills Moss Permanently? How to Keep It From Returning

No moss killer can permanently prevent moss from returning if the lawn conditions that favor it stay the same. For lasting results, remove or treat the moss you have, then help grass grow more densely by addressing shade, soggy soil, compaction, or thin turf where those problems apply.

For small patches, rake out moss gently and collect the loosened material so grass seed can reach the soil. For larger areas, a lawn moss-control product may be more practical, but follow its label for application, watering, and when you can rake or reseed; using extra product will not fix the underlying growing conditions.

Vinegar may damage moss, but it can also injure nearby grass and plants, and adding Dawn dish soap does not make the mixture a permanent lawn solution. We recommend using a product labeled for lawn moss if treatment is needed, then improving the site so grass can fill in.
